
LNG Trade — Delivering Natural Gas Across Oceans
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) trade has become a major component of the global energy industry, enabling natural gas to be transported efficiently across oceans to regions not connected to pipeline systems.
By converting natural gas into a liquid form, LNG makes long-distance international energy trade economically viable and operationally practical.
For large-scale international transport, LNG is loaded onto specially designed double-hulled LNG carrier ships. These vessels are engineered with advanced safety and insulation systems that maintain the LNG at cryogenic temperatures of approximately -260°F (-162°C) throughout the journey. The double-hull construction provides additional protection against leaks, collisions, and environmental hazards, while the insulated cargo tanks minimize heat transfer and evaporation during transport.
Once an LNG tanker arrives at a receiving terminal or import facility, the LNG is carefully unloaded into large, heavily insulated storage tanks. From storage, the LNG undergoes a process known as regasification, where it is warmed and converted back into its gaseous state. The natural gas is then injected into pipeline distribution systems and delivered to utilities, industrial facilities, commercial users, and power generation plants.

Small-Scale LNG Distribution
In addition to large-scale ocean transport, LNG is increasingly traded in smaller quantities through small-scale LNG distribution systems. These shipments are commonly used for regional energy supply, remote communities, islands, industrial operations, and transportation fuel markets. Small-scale LNG can be transported using specially designed cryogenic containers mounted on trucks, railcars, or smaller marine vessels. Many of these containers are compatible with standard international shipping systems, allowing LNG to be moved flexibly through existing global logistics networks.
Peak-Shaving Facilities
Another important part of the LNG market involves peak-shaving facilities. These facilities liquefy and store natural gas during periods of low demand and then regasify and distribute the gas during times of peak consumption, such as extremely cold winter days or periods of high electricity demand. Peak-shaving operations help stabilize local energy supplies, improve reliability, and reduce pressure on pipeline systems. In some cases, LNG from these facilities is also transported regionally by truck to support nearby markets and industrial consumers.
U.S. LNG Infrastructure
More than 170 LNG facilities operate across the United States, providing a wide range of services. Some facilities export natural gas from the U.S., while others supply natural gas to the interstate pipeline network or local distribution companies. Additional facilities are used for natural gas storage to meet periods of peak demand.

Historical Growth
The United States has become one of the world’s leading LNG exporters. In 2020, the U.S. exported nearly 2,400 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of natural gas in the form of LNG, primarily through large LNG tanker ships, with additional smaller quantities transported by containers and trucks. By August 2021, U.S. LNG exports had reached approximately 40 countries across five continents, reflecting the growing global demand for American natural gas.
Limited Imports
Despite being a major exporter, the United States still imports limited amounts of LNG, particularly into the New England region. This is largely due to regional constraints in pipeline infrastructure and underground gas storage capacity, especially during periods of high winter heating demand. LNG imports help supplement local energy supplies and maintain system reliability when domestic pipeline deliveries are insufficient.
A Strategically Important Commodity
The global LNG trade continues to expand as countries seek cleaner-burning fuel alternatives, diversify energy supply sources, and improve energy security. Growing investments in liquefaction plants, shipping fleets, import terminals, and regasification infrastructure are transforming LNG into one of the most strategically important commodities in the international energy market.
