What is an LNG Terminal?

A specialized industrial facility designed to process, store, transfer, import, or export Liquefied Natural Gas — critical links in the global natural gas supply chain.

LNG terminals enable natural gas to be transported efficiently over long distances, particularly across oceans where pipelines are not available or practical.

Natural gas is converted into LNG by cooling it to approximately -260°F (-162°C), which transforms the gas into a liquid state. In this form, natural gas occupies about 600 times less volume than in its gaseous state, making it much easier and more economical to transport and store.

Export LNG Terminals

Export terminals receive natural gas from domestic pipeline networks and process it through large liquefaction facilities. The gas is purified, cooled into LNG, stored in insulated cryogenic tanks, and then loaded onto specially designed LNG carrier ships for export to international markets.

Import LNG Terminals

Import terminals receive LNG shipments from overseas carriers. Once unloaded, the LNG is stored in insulated tanks and later reheated through regasification, converting it back into natural gas for local or regional pipeline distribution systems.
